I have been asked a lot recently by Keepers, their Parents and Coaches to help them with the topic of Pre-Game Warm-ups specifically for Goalkeepers.
I wrote the Below Blog last year, so thought I would ‘Re-Post’ it.
“When I ask my keepers what their ‘Pre-Game Warm Up‘ routine is, I’m always surprised to hear that 90% of them do NOT have one.
They explain that their ‘Goalkeeper’ Warm-up typically is when the team shoots on them just before the games starts!
“What is wrong with that? Aren’t they getting a work out before a game facing the shots? Well, This type of Warm up is mainly geared towards the shooter and helping them get their sights in for game time.
A keeper NEEDS a Structured warm up just like field players do. I see at games nice Warm-up squares set up with all the players working on possession, passing and such. But no sign of the keeper Warming up the specific techniques required of them during game time.
The Pre-Game Warm Up below is a tried and tested Warm-up that I have used as a Keeper AND a Coach. It is a progressive warm-up beginning with working the Feet, working through the Hands, High Balls, Diving, Crosses, and Distribution.
Please print out and either use this a ‘Ready-Made’ Warm up Routine, or as the foundation of a warm-up that you and your keeper can personalize!

REMEMBER – TALK TO YOU KEEPER ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT AND HOW THE FEEL AS PART OF THEIR WARM UP!! IT’S ABOUT THEM AS A KEEPER, NOT YOU AS A COACH!!!!!
