Having recently been to several games to watch keepers in action, it’s alarming the number of parents who are shouting instruction to their Child that really contradicts what they should be doing during the game.
I don’t want this to sound like I don’t appreciate the passion you guys show towards you keeper, but please ‘let your keepers actions do the talking, not you!!’.
If you have invested time and money into your Keepers development by having them attend a Goalkeeper Specific training program, such as Just4Keepers, that develops the keeper fundamentals and creates a solid foundation, please do your best to allow that development to take its course. For the most part if you are yelling from the side line instructions to your Son/Daughter, you are more than likely confusing them or contradicting the work their coaches are doing to help them improve. Unless that is you are seasoned goalkeeping coaches or experienced keeper, lol. But, if you are you probably aren’t yelling anything during the game as you’ve been in that position before.
It’s great to enjoy and share the highs experienced along the way as a parent of a child who plays this specialized position we love! However, it’s also important your’e there to help be compassionate during the lows too!
I recently heard the following from parents
‘Why didn’t you catch that ball?’ yelled to a keeper when they used the correct technique to parry/deflect a ball to safety.
“You’ve got be more aggressive and get that ball!!’ when the keeper was showing patience and poise in a breakaway situation shepherding the player away from goal and danger.
“Punt the Ball!!” when I know the coach of the team was trying to play the ball out of the back and would have preferred the keeper to have rolled the ball to a full back.
Ultimately these calls are more detrimental than supportive.
PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR KEEPER!! WE NEED IT!! LET YOUR KEEPERS COACH HELP THEM DEVELOP and LET YOU KEEPERS ACTIONS DO THE TALKING, NOT YOU!!!
