For any young keeper (or parent of a goalkeeper) PLEASE take note of the quote below from one of the best goalkeepers to have played the professional game of soccer
Neville Southall played for Everton and Wales and at his peak he was voted the best keeper in the world.
In fact if he was playing today, he would be without doubt one of the best goalkeepers in the premiership and internationally.
So for any young keeper and or their parents, please read what Nev states about his success as a goalkeeper!!!
He states, work hard and this is something that I personally believe in because I believe if you want to be better than average, you must 100% be prepared to work harder than the average.
But the most important thing I think neville mentioned was the word… FUN!
Here is one of the best all time goalkeepers in the world stating the importance of having fun.
I also feel so very honoured and privileged to have trained with Neville on a daily basis for two years while I was at Everton, because I got to see personally how hard he worked but with a smile on his face.
I also believe this is where a lot of keepers and or their parents go wrong… they forget the fun element.
This mind you is down to egotistical coaches putting pressure on their young team and goalkeeper (s) that take all the fun out of playing in goal for the goalkeeper (s)
But keepers and their parents need to rise above these coaches who spoil the game of soccer because they are more interested in their win for their own selfish reasons, rather than the enjoyment of the game for their young team and goalkeeper (s).
I do not mean to knock soccer coaches as I know they are all not the same but the majority have not succeeded in soccer themselves, so deep down they do not really understand the game and they sadly live their life through their teams eyes and they are that desperate for the win, to make themselves feel and look good, they completely forget about the feelings of their players.
So remember the legend Nevs wise words… yes work hard (VERY VERY HARD) and achieve to be the best that you can be…. BUT DO NOT FORGET TO HAVE FUN.
Because after all, is this why we play in goal ?
Hope Neville Southalls Tip helps
